I Repaired Two Antique Drawers
Переглядів 2986 місяців тому
Welcome back to my channel friends! In this video I show how I repaired these drawers from what appears to be a late 1800’s chest of drawers. The bottoms were in horrible shape including holes and was repaired before with nails which is not a realistic option considering the bottom was made of poplar and not plywood. I had to remove part of the drawer side and make new parts to hold the drawer ...

    Thanks for the great review and I appreciate your honesty. I have the 6" model and was impressed with it, it is still cutting clean for about 2 years of light use, I agree the fence is hard to adjust but still doable, the only issue i'm having with it now is that its becoming extremely loud, I don't use dust collection so i clean the shavings manualy after use and I regularry clean the little blades with alcohol, I have not taken it apart yet and I don't even know how hard that would be, what would you do in my situation, what would you do to resolve the soudness issue? any advice appreciated.

    • @HurdCrafters
      @HurdCrafters 3 дні тому

      I would be getting a shop vac at least for dust extraction. Ideally you need a separator as well or the filter will clog. If this issue is from not having dust collection the issue would return after some use… is that an option?

    I don't know about the blade itself, but maybe just move the clamp away from the saw blade especially if you're gonna pull on it (don't want it falling on the blade and/or trapping your hand). I like it though; smart.

    • @HurdCrafters
      @HurdCrafters 4 місяці тому

      The clamp is not too close to the blade in my opinion. I tried to get it close as possible without being unsafe for me. I repeat, ‘unsafe for me.’ I haven’t had a bessey clamp fail once already tightened so… i have however had a bessey clamp fail to tighten and of course got a replacement.

    Interesting. I bought the 12 inch model with the cast iron fence. Calibrating the infeed and outfeed was hell and took me many, many hours. but the cast iron bed is perfectly flat on mine. Is that model cast iron or something else? The biggest issue I had with mine is the cast iron fence. They didn't update the bracket that holds it on, and it's too heavy. Ended up having to put the aluminum fence on, which is flat and sturdy. Working through the cast iron fence issue with customer service right now.

    Hi, a few quick questions. How can you sharpen a plane blade by hand to exactly the right angle every time? And having sharpened the blade, why do you lay the plane flat on the bench? Doesn’t that damage the blade?

    • @HurdCrafters
      @HurdCrafters 6 місяців тому

      Great questions! The correct angle is already established so after a lot of practice I can maintain that angle, at least for the most part. I then do a micro bevel with 16k grit and a tertiary bevel on the back with the ruler trick. Check out Rob Cosmans UA-cam channel and specifically his videos on 32 seconds to sharp. What I showed in this video is a modified version because I actually dont need this plane to be perfect. Its more of a collectible item to go with the rest of my woodriver hand planes. 4 more and I have them all! When it comes to laying the sole flat on the bench: you will find everyone has their own opinions on the subject just as with sharpening. My bench is made with wood and the plane is made to shave wood so the only issue with laying the sole flat is doing it to hard and causing the blade to move. I always take my time and when using larger planes and doing detailed work, i will often lay the plane across my tool tray or have a piece of scrap to hold the plane off the blade to prevent any issues. I hope this answers your questions. If not, please let me know. Thanks for watching!

  • @RYwoodview

    • @HurdCrafters
      @HurdCrafters 7 місяців тому

      Someone finally asked lol. It’s a long story and prob not what you expect because I did not get at a yard sale… my grandmother purchased me a ridgid for a job I was completing for her many years ago and it never cut square. I took it for maintenance multiple times at a repair shop near me and they supposedly fixed it every time. The shop closed down so i then took to Home Depot and they charge me 21 dollars and change to ship it off. It came back and I showed the manager the problem and showed them information that the saw was now obsolete and the parts i needed were not made. It cut square without using the slide. As soon as you use the slide it bowed. I then had to take it to a different home depot and 2 months later a new saw was shipped to me. So i only paid a little over 20 bucks for it. I really have gotten really good deals on my tool’s except for the sawstop and jessem router. For instance, I bought 4 new hand planes for 50 bucks also…. Thanks for watching!

      I’m in agreement with you! Most people don’t have the space for something too large. BTW, your diy bowl kiln is looking sweet my friend! I cant wait to hear the results you get. I may be building me one.

    Normal side (smaller one) I made three like the one with the wings, I hated them and none sold until I modified them in to six smaller ones and they sold in few days. Just my 2 🪙

    I think the bigger board is really cool! Hard to decide🤔

      I think the smaller board will be easier to sell. more than likely that will be our decision unless I have a lot more people overturn our decision. Thanks for playing!
